Granite State Comicon & Gene Colan

Might help the fans if I noted where the Comicon was taking place, eh?
Radission Center of New Hampshire 700 Elm Street, Manchester, NH
The show's from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Come on down and buy a copy of $ell-outs (hells, we'll even sign it for ya!), take part in the world's largest jam comic (overseen by the uber-talented Marek Bennett), and buy some back issues from my friend Tim Knowles, late of Comics, Etc. --  Keene's first comics shop, which I miss dearly. OK, I'm not sure Tim's actually going to be there, but he usually is at these shows.
And there's some comics pros on hand, too! Ethan van Sciver (who's doing free sketches, I'm told), Scott Kolins, and many others will be there!
And you know who else will be there, kids? Bob Almond, who inked most of Christopher Priest's Black Panther! YAY! That'll be another signed book for my wall! (Depending on attendance, I'll try to catch up with van Sciver as well, but I imagine he'll be a big draw, what with having drawn New X-Men and Green Lantern.
If you're looking for me, best to work around the 1-2 p.m. hour, as I'll be sneaking off for lunch with my friend Kristie, who I haven't seen in, oh, 10 years. Should be a good time. Kristie was part of my most excellent staff at The Equinox, editing the "Style" section and knocking out some damn fine pages (and a cover or two). She's offered to help out with future CD designs for The Beesting Conspiracy, bless her.
Right. The Con. Here:

And it pains me to report that Gene Colan (Tomb of Dracula, Howard the Duck) has been hospitalized for liver failure. Marvel apparently isn't all that interested in helping him out, which is a damn shame. But Clifford Meth (who's still selling Dave Cockrum's personal comics collection to benefit widow Paty) has stepped up to organize a benefit. Check it out:

Spring Break '08 Part I: The Beesting Conspiracy

The plan was to learn how to play drums, record at least three songs, and do some clean-up work on The Mystery Projet.

Space Panic! is a going concern

Barlow & I rocked out together quite well yesterday, coming up with one of the more interesting covers you're likely to hear in your lifetime. The song is Probably Will by Concrete Blonde. Just don't expect a straight-up cover. (Rubs hands together, laughing in a sinister manner).
I didn't keep track of the number of takes on anything, but I don't think anything took more than five. The recording session lasted around 4 hours.

I may not be able to get in the blow-by-blow updates I was hoping for for this weekend's Conspiracy sessions (beginning in about two hours), because the intrawebs don't appear to be working out in the country. I am dictating this post to my administrative assistant.
More later. Maybe.

Another circle closes (LONG TBC UDPATE-TYPE THING-NEW LYRICS!!!!)

The day thus far

ITEM! More practice for the Swingin' Hits anthology song, which is evolving as we speak, mostly because I am horrible at learning other people's songs. Thankfully, [info]danielbarlowremains the coolest guy in the world, and instead of telling me how crap I am, has decided to work with my limitations as a player. To tell you any more would be to ruin the surprise, so I'll move on...

ITEM! I TOTALLY fucked up my self-administered haircut this morning, and am now once again sporting "a skin job for a hairdo." (That's an Operation: Mindcrime reference, by the way, because you simply can not get enough of those, right?)

ITEM! I cleaned my kitchen today.

ITEM! I finally managed to confound Pandora! It took five full minutes to generate a station based on The Dream Academy. This is approximately four minutes longer than it's taken to create a station for me, and I've thrown some pretty obscure requests at it before. It's also slow bringing songs up on the station. HA!

ITEM! I am now about to go to the post office to mail out some discs for the folks kind enough to request them.

ITEM! If you want fencesitting on CD, please let me know sooner rather than later. As I move toward completion of The Fall (and What Happened After), I'm getting to like the idea of putting fencesitting "out of print" more and more. Requests can be sent to thebeestingconspiracy at gmail dot com. All discs are individually signed and numbered!

What would Shakespeare think... (STUDIO UPDATE)

...I kinda wonder, having just finished recording Hamlet
Not that there's any real connection between the play and the song, exactly. Just the use of the names Hamlet and Ophelia.
I believe this marks the first time ever that I managed to record a guitar in one take. I'm very pleased, even though this song's a piece of cake to play. I recorded the clean guitar part directly into the 4 track and with my beautiful, shiny, wonderful, excellent sounding microphone placed around the neck pickup. The direct one will be up front in the mix, of course, because it sounds better, but the mic'd track really gives the whole thing some depth that wouldn't be there otherwise.
Of course I couldn't resist a little bit of trickery, so there's some effects (compression, EQ, reverb) on the vocals. That actually took six takes. The fifth one would have been a keeper, except that I banged the mic against my teeth bringing it back up to my face for the final verse. I know "they" say you're not supposed to handle the microphone whilst recording, but "they" are wrong. I'm far more comfortable moving around a bit when I sing.
I LOVE my new microphone. I know that I don't, in reality, sound any better than I did before, but it seems like I do.
So, that's one song totally done, and one mostly done (I think I'm going to re-track what used to be the "main" guitar on The Bridge, because there's a few things none of you would notice bothering me about it, and even though it's barely audible for the most part, I know they're there, and I'm not playing the "fuck it, it's close enough" game anymore. (Well, mostly, but we'll talk about THAT later this week.)
And I guess it's back to the practice grind for now. More tomorrow? Most likely.
